Évaluation des conséquences économiques de la gestion des risques sanitaires liés aux proliférations phytoplanctoniques marines ArchiMer
Ami, Dominique; Rochaix, Lise.
General introduction: The setting up of monitoring networks for coastal water quality of the REPHY type by IFREMER was taken from a public health standpoint and fits broadly in with a principle of precaution regarding eating shellfish meant for human consumption. The benefits to be compared with the costs of managing the REPHY network (estimated at FF7.4 million in 1995) are therefore first and foremost the reduction of the risk of poisoning and can be captured by subtracting the sanitation costs that are associated with them. Evaluating these direct benefits is, however, no easy task. The network leads in fact to the reduction of occurrences of poisoning such that the epidemiological data on which such a calculation should be founded diminishes over time....

Health impact of unicellular algae of the Ostreopsis genus blooms in the Mediterranean Sea: experience of the French Mediterranean coast surveillance network from 2006 to 2009 ArchiMer
Tichadou, Lucia; Glaizal, Mathieu; Armengaud, Alexis; Grossel, Hubert; Lemee, Rodolphe; Kantin, Roger; Lasalle, Jean-luc; Drouet, Geneveve; Rambaud, Loic; Malfait, Philippe; De Haro, Luc.
Objective. Ostreopsis ovata and Ostreopsis siamensis are tropical unicellular algae that have been found recently in the Mediterranean. Both of these dinoflagellates produce palytoxin (PTX)-like toxins that are powerful vasoconstrictors in mammals. Since 2003, Ostreopsis blooms in Italy and Spain have been accompanied by reports of respiratory problems and skin/mucosa irritation in persons in contact with toxic microalgal cells (epiphytes, plankton, or sea spray) or associated toxins. Methods. In France, a surveillance network has been set up to monitor water conditions and to protect swimmers from contamination due to Ostreopsis. Results. Between 2006 and 2009, a total of nine blooms were observed on the French Mediterranean coast including five that led...

Hindcast and Near Real-Time Monitoring of Green Macroalgae Blooms in Shallow Coral Reef Lagoons Using Sentinel-2: A New-Caledonia Case Study ArchiMer
Brisset, Maele; Van Wynsberge, Simon; Andréfouët, Serge; Payri, Claude; Soulard, Benoit; Bourassin, Emmanuel; Le Gendre, Romain; Coutures, Emmanuel.
Despite the necessary trade-offs between spatial and temporal resolution, remote sensing is an effective approach to monitor macroalgae blooms, understand their origins and anticipate their developments. Monitoring of small tropical lagoons is challenging because they require high resolutions. Since 2017, the Sentinel-2 satellites has provided new perspectives, and the feasibility of monitoring green algae blooms was investigated in this study. In the Poé-Gouaro-Déva lagoon, New Caledonia, recent Ulva blooms are the cause of significant nuisances when beaching. Spectral indices using the blue and green spectral bands were confronted with field observations of algal abundances using images concurrent with fieldwork. Depending on seabed compositions and...

Impact of granular filtration on ultrafiltration membrane performance as pre-treatment to seawater desalination in presence of algal blooms ArchiMer
Sabiri, Nour-eddine; Sechet, Veronique; Jaouen, Pascal; Pontie, Maxime; Masse, Anthony; Plantier, Severine.
To mitigate fouling of the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane and improve permeate quality, we coupled granular filters (GF) with UF membrane as a pre-treatment for reconstituted seawater in the presence of algal bloom. Mono and bilayer granular filtrations were led at a mean velocity of 10 m h(-1) over a 7-hour period. Both GF gave the same algal cell retention rate (similar to 63%) after 7 hours of filtration. Turbidity reduction rate was 50% for the monolayer filter and 75% for the bilayer filter. Resulting organic matter removal rate was 10% for the monolayer filter and 35% for the bilayer filter. Dissolved organic carbon removal was low (20%) with the bilayer filter and non-existent with the monolayer filter. GF-coupled UF reduced humic acids in the...

Remote sensing of the chlorophyll-a based on OLI/Landsat-8 and MSI/Sentinel-2A (Barra Bonita reservoir, Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
WATANABE,FERNANDA; ALCÂNTARA,ENNER; RODRIGUES,THANAN; ROTTA,LUIZ; BERNARDO,NARIANE; IMAI,NILTON.
ABSTRACT In this present research, we assessed the performance of band algorithms in estimating chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration based on bands of two new sensors: Operational Land Imager onboard Landsat-8 satellite (OLI/Landsat-8), and MultiSpectral Instrument onboard Sentinel-2A (MSI/Sentinel-2A). Band combinations designed for Thematic Mapper onboard Landsat-5 satellite (TM/Landsat-5) and MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer onboard Envisat platform (MERIS/Envisat) were adapted for OLI/Landsat-8 and MSI/Sentinel-2A bands. Algorithms were calibrated using in situ measurements collected in three field campaigns carried out in different seasons. The study area was the Barra Bonita hydroelectric reservoir (BBHR), a highly productive aquatic system....

Satellite and in situ observations of a late winter phytoplankton bloom, in the northern Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Gohin, Francis; Lampert, Luis; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Herbland, Alain; Nezan, Elisabeth.
A phytoplankton bloom was observed in late winter 2000, on the continental shelf offshore of southern Brittany, in northwestern Bay of Biscay. This bloom appeared initially along the 120-m isobath, in stratified and clear waters, at the interface between the oceanic water and the plumes of southern Brittany rivers (mainly the Loire and Vilaine). The development of the bloom was triggered by favourable meteorological conditions, characterised by solar irradiance reaching the maximum level expected for that period of the year. Outside of the bloom area, the phytoplankton photosynthesis was irradiance limited: inshore, because of the stronger attenuation of the light; offshore, because of the weak stratification. The hydrological conditions at the onset of...
